More parents have turned to private investigators for help after suspecting their children of abusing drugs or being engaged in compensated dating, a detective agency reveals.

Philic Man Hin-lam, director of the Global Investigation and Security Consultancy, said the number of parents who seek help from her agency to snoop on their children has increased.

"Parents have generally started questioning whether their children have been engaged in compensated dating when they see them using more brand-name products and wearing more makeup," Man said.

"Sometimes, parents may be worried when their children stay inside their bedrooms for a long time, because they don't know what they are doing.

"Sometimes parents may find that their children don't go to tutorial sessions as they say."

Her company handled 298 investigations into children in 2011 - a 68percent jump on 177 cases the year before.

Once parents employ her firm to look into their children, Man said her private eyes will start off by joining the social media used by youngsters and try to befriend them.

"We try to investigate their daily habits and where they go usually, or the people they meet," Man said.

Sometimes we have to try to befriend them to gain more understanding about them."

Apart from helping parents investigate their children, Man said some clients have also asked them to investigate whether their spouses are engaging in extramarital affairs.

Man said she uses tailor-made "weapons" that may be installed in personal belongings, such as smartphones being used for secret filming.

Currently, most of her agency's investigators are women, with male investigators providing backup support.

"Generally, it is easier for female investigators to launch investigations, as people generally have a lower alertness of women," she said.

It is easier for women to impersonate others to help the investigations.
